Lieutenant LaGuerta : is a tough, determined woman in command of the Homicide division who is not above making her subordinates feel intimidated. She has a sincere dislike for Debra (which in later series has all but disappeared, even being happy to be the one to promote her to Homicide Detective at the end of Season 3). In the first season, she made no secret of her attraction to Dexter, whom she flirted with constantly, to his discomfort (which after the 1st season it has yet been mentioned or suggested and sees him more as a good friend). At the end of the first season, she is removed from command, but returns to her old job once the new Lieutenant proves to be unstable. When her friend and former partner James Doakes becomes the prime suspect in the Bay Harbor Butcher case, she tries to clear his name. She learns from a questionable source of two Special Forces missions Doakes took part in that directly conflicted with the deaths of two Butcher victims. However, Doakes is found dead in a seemingly accidental explosion, along with the body of drug dealer Jose Garza, and the case is closed. The evidence LaGuerta finds is ignored. After his death, LaGuerta starts a memorial fund for him, asking police officers for donations, and refuses to think of her deceased friend as a serial killer. As she recovers from the trauma of Doakes death, she leads an investigation into the murder of Oscar Prado, the brother of her ex-boyfriend Miguel Prado. She also develops a close relationship with lawyer Ellen Wolf, and is devastated when Wolf is found dead. But through the help of some personal investigation work, along with Dexter's help, she was able to discover that Miguel was the one who killed Wolf and usually confides in Dexter as he is the "only other one who knows". She becomes distraught when the Cuban community is thinking about naming a highway after Miguel and wants to find legal evidence to prove he killed Wolf, but Dexter is able to convince her that doing so would only hurt Miguel's family, the Cuban Community, and even then there is a high chance that won't prove anything and drops it.
Her characterization in the show departs significantly from that in Darkly Dreaming Dexter, in which she is a shrill, manipulative woman whose only real objective is promotion within the department. At the end of the first novel, Dexter's brother Brian kills her while Dexter looks the other way.

Harry Morgan was a Detective and highly-respected member of the Miami Police Department, and a close friend of his immediate superior Captain Tom Matthews. In the course of a high-stakes drug case, Harry began an illicit relationship with Laura Moser to gather information and evidence on the drug lords in question. As Laura feared, she was discovered and made an example of; she and three others were executed with chainsaws in a shipping container. Her sons Brian and Dexter were left in the container for several days, sitting in three inches of blood, until Harry and a police team recovered them. Emotionally rocked by what had transpired, Harry, regretting how he used Laura, adopted Dexter, while Brian was sent into care. At an early age, Harry realized that the experience had left Dexter with numerous sociopathic tendencies such as a fascination with blood, disassociation, and eventually zoosadism.
At first Harry attempted to treat these compulsions though normal psychological measures, but he eventually came to the conclusion that Dexter's increasingly sadistic nature couldn't be repressed or controlled. Instead, Harry decided to train the budding sociopath as a vigilante; to hunt and kill criminals who flaunted conventional justice without leaving clues that could lead to his discovery. Dexter prized these lessons as a means to fulfill his desires unmolested and with his father's approval, dubbing them the "Code of Harry". By Contrast, Harry's relationship with his biological daughter Deb was more complicated. She craved her father's approval desperately, but due to being excluded from the the father-son outings Harry used to cover his teaching Dexter about killing, grew up feeling unappreciated.
Harry was initially proud of Dexter's capabilities; he gave Dexter permission to take his first human life in his late teens when he discovered that one of his nurses was slowly poisoning him - and had killed other patients - with overdoses of morphine, and praised him afterward. However, when Juan Rinez, a pimp who was murdering his own prostitutes, was released due to a faulty(mistyped) search warrant, Harry lost his temper and told Dexter he was right in training him. When Dexter tracks down and kills Rinez, Harry is taken aback by the way Dexter proudly shows him the pimp's dismembered body; It is Harry's first actual view of Dexter's "work", and he finds himself horrified by what he has turned his son into. Harry commits suicide a few days later, by deliberately overdosing on his medication, but not before telling Matthews to look after his children. Dexter discovers this close to the show's second season, and the knowledge makes Dexter begin to question his father's motives.
Throughout Season 3 Harry appears frequently to Dexter in visions, giving him advice Dexter often willfully ignores. Harry, in these visions, continually advises Dexter not to get involved personally with people, because if he does, they will discover his secret. Harry is especially emphatic about Dexter abandoning his plans to teach Miguel Prado how to kill. Eventually, Dexter appears to come to an understanding with his father and the visions become less argumentative.
